With his increasing power and wealth, Tony begins to heed the voices of paranoia: he can’t allow himself to trust anyone, and he falls ever deeper into a dark and violent version of the American dream that he himself created.… Screenwriter Oliver Stone potently updated the classic 1932 Hollywood gangster picture Scarface with a new version in 1983: he set the plot in the present and transformed the protagonist into a Cuban immigrant. Stone, who wrote the script while struggling with his own addiction to cocaine, found the ideal director in Brian De Palma, six years his senior. Together they created a brutal, stylized movie that some in the critical world slashed for its explicit depiction of violence. For his authentic performance, Al Pacino was nominated for a Golden Globe.

Brian De Palma (b. 1940, Newark, New Jersey) is one of the most intriguing directors to come out of the New Hollywood generation of the 1970s. He graduated from Columbia University, and after starting out in shorts he moved on to feature film direction and production, making a name for himself with the comedy Hi, Mom! (1970). During the 1970s and 1980s he added several hits to his filmography, including the inimitable high school horror flick Carrie (1976) and the thrillers Blow Out (1981) and Body Double (1984). In 1987 his gangster film The Untouchables was a resounding success. Other popular titles: the Vietnam drama Casualties of War (1989), another gangster flick Carlito’s Way (1993), the action thriller Mission: Impossible (1996), the crime drama Snake Eyes (1998), and the neo-noir The Black Dahlia (2006). In 2007 he again made headlines with the war drama Redacted.
