Music producer Phil Spector has gone down in the history of rock for more than just his work with The Beatles and Tina Turner. In 2003 he was accused of murdering a young actress, and he hired attorney Linda Kenney Baden to defend him. This low-key drama, focusing on the unusual relationship between the accused and his lawyer, rests on the performances of Al Pacino and Helen Mirren.
Phil Spector is one of the most famous producers in the history of modern popular music. In the 1960s he came up with the Wall of Sound recording technique, and his collaborations with The Beatles (with whom he recorded the immortal album Let It Be), Ike and Tina Turner, and many other musicians helped to transform rock music. In 2003, Spector was charged with the murder of a young actress, and he hired attorney Linda Kenney Baden to defend him. In this made-for-HBO film, experienced director David Mamet focuses on the ambivalent relationship between the lawyer and the famous eccentric accused of murder. This thoroughly intimate drama, which takes place primarily in the darkened interiors of Spector’s luxury mansion, is built upon the performances of lead actors Al Pacino and Helen Mirren. Pacino succeeds in faithfully portraying the inconsistent personality of the charismatic Spector, who is hopelessly lost in his distorted private world.

David Mamet (b. 1947, Chicago, Illinois) is a playwright, screenwriter, director and producer. His play Glengarry Glen Ross (1984) won the Pulitzer Prize and four Tony Awards. During his career, he has twice been nominated for an Oscar in the category of Best Adapted Screenplay – The Verdict (Sidney Lumet, 1982) and Wag the Dog (Barry Levinson, 1997). He began his career as a playwright in 1976 and directed his first film 11 years later. Mamet enjoyed immediate success in the theater thanks to his plays Sexual Perversity in Chicago (1976) and American Buffalo (1976). His directorial and screenwriting debut, the con artist caper House of Games (1987), won awards at the festival in Venice, and his subsequent writer-director efforts have enjoyed similar success.
