Moonlight Mile

Horizons 2003 / Moonlight Mile / USA 2002

Diana is shot shortly before her wedding to Joe. Parents Ben and JoJo hope that Joe will fill the empty space their daughter has left behind. Joe had been living with the family for several months and there’s no real reason for that to change. But they don’t know that, just before the murder was committed, Joe and Diana had decided to split up for good. And now Joe has fallen in love with someone else. But how can he break this news to them without causing them more pain?

Moonlight Mile Moonlight Mile

Synopsis

A day begins for Ben Floss, a real estate agent, and his wife, the writer JoJo, which turns out to be interminably long. Their only daughter Diana, who was soon to be married, got caught in the crossfire in a restaurant during a shooting incident. Today is her funeral. Both parents, each in his or her own way, try to ease the situation since there is still Joe to think about, Diana’s fiancé, who has been living in their house for several months. Ben, above all, tries as best he can to help Joe since he believes the lad will fill the empty space left by Diana. This is why he also offers him work in his company. During negotiations with the criminal lawyer, in which Diana’s fiancé also takes part, Joe realises that his situation has become intolerable. The two who are now offering him a home, work and family environment have no idea that, shortly before her death, he and Diana had decided to break up for good. And now he has met Bertie whom he is crazy about. But how can he tell Ben and JoJo without causing them more pain? The story was inspired by real events in the filmmaker’s life. His girlfriend was also murdered several years ago. Now that a certain amount of time has elapsed, Brad Silberling is able to give this tragic memory a tinge of humour.

About the director

Brad Silberling

Brad Silberling (1963, California, USA) completed his studies and set out in the footsteps of his father, a television producer, and began producing children’s television programmes. He graduated from California University in 1987 (with the short film Repairs) and left to work for Universal studios where he directed episodes of TV series such as L.A. Law. There, Steven Spielberg entrusted him with the direction of a feature-length film, the family comedy about a little ghost Casper (1995). Three years later he caught the attention of the international audience with the film City of Angels, a remake of Wim Wenders’ Der Himmel Über Berlin. Moonlight Mile (2002), which Silberling wrote and directed, is based on his own personal experiences.
