Chinese Odyssey 2002

Synopsis

<DIV> <DIV>This fairytale story is set in China during the Ming dynasty. The young emperor and his sister Wushuang flee the imperial palace from the servitude of their domineering mother the empress. In town they meet a wanderer and rowdy nicknamed King Bully and his sister Phoenix. It’s love at first sight, but fate sets many obstacles in the path of the two couples, obstacles which have to be overcome before they can attain happiness side by side. This incredibly fresh and witty spectacle, involving disguises and misunderstandings resulting from changes of sex and social class, parodies and, at the same time, pays tribute to Chinese romantic stories. The director comments on his film with the words: “I had a lot of fun making this film. It has all the traits of my comedies, but it’s also a highly romantic story. My faith in the quality of the film lies in the promise that, if I find it entertaining, then so will the audience”. The producer of this film is the well-known Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai.</DIV></DIV>
