Early Summer

Retrospective: 100 Years of Yasujiro Ozu 2003 / Bakushu / Japan 1951

It´s high time daughter Noriko found a mate. The whole family thinks so and begins to look for a suitable and perhaps even wealthy groom. Noriko, however, throws a wrench into the plan when, going on instinct, she chooses Yabe, a far less desirable boy from the neighbourhood.

Early Summer

Synopsis

Lurking in the background behind the regularity of the three-generation Mamiya family´s everyday rituals is one troubling factor: it´s high time that daughter Noriko found a mate. Noriko shows little interest in this family task, but her boss plays a role, directing the family to a successful middle-aged entrepreneur. Noriko, however, throws a wrench into the plan when, going on instinct, she chooses Yabe, a boy from the neighbourhood. In the end, the family comes to terms with this much less advantageous catch, and Noriko leaves for the distant location where her partner will work.... In contrast to Late Spring, in which modernity and tradition were in harmony, Early Summer shows the incompatibility of the two, but the characters wisely accept it as inevitable.
