Barbarians

East of the West - Competition 2014 / Varvari / Serbia, Montenegro, Slovenia 2014

Teenager Luka lives in the small Serbian town of Mladenovac with a mother who can’t handle him anymore, and his life is one scrape after another. He and his mate Flash lead the local football fans and spend most of their spare time rooting for their team and drinking beer. Through the destiny of one individual, Ivan Ikić presents a laconic, highly authentic account of the young Serbian generation who, in his words, are "growing up in a society of lost values, where corruption, immorality, crime and abuse of power only prosper.”

Barbarians Barbarians

Synopsis

Teenager Luka lives in the small Serbian town of Mladenovac with a mother who can’t handle him anymore, and his life is one scrape after another. He and his best mate Flash lead the local football fans and spend most of their spare time rooting for their team and drinking beer. Debuting director Ivan Ikić set his realistic tale of coming of age and the quest for identity against a backdrop of the unrest sparked by Kosovo’s declaration of independence. Through the destiny of one individual, the filmmaker presents a laconic account of the young generation who, in his words, are "growing up in a society of lost values, where corruption, immorality, crime and abuse of power only prosper.” The young director achieves a high measure of authenticity thanks to his decision to cast the majority of roles with nonactors (only three supporting roles are played by professionals) who never saw a script and whose lives in many respects reflected the experiences of their characters onscreen.
