White Death

Documentary Films - Competition 2015 / Muerta Blanca / Chile 2014

Using a variety of formats and animation techniques, a story unfolds before our eyes of a Chilean military company trapped in the snow during a cruel Andean storm. Yet the film doesn’t aim to provide a faithful reconstruction of events but rather to investigate the boundless solitude and blistering cold that bores down to the bone when a person stands on the threshold of white death.

White Death White Death

Synopsis

Brooding music intensifies the tone of a desolate black-and-white panorama immersed in chiaroscuro. This experimental documentary thematizes the tragedy that befell a Chilean army company in 2005 during a severe storm in the Andes. A recording of a radio conversation of men trapped in the snow can be heard in the background. The film does not seek to faithfully reconstruct the events as they happened. The combination of various film formats and animation techniques communicates a feeling of unfathomable loneliness and blistering cold that bores down to the bone – the desperation of a person standing on the threshold of white death.
