Sleeping District

Imagina 2015 / Sleeping District / Denmark, Russia 2014

A silent film that speaks with eloquence. Composed into attractive images, this excursion to the empty apartments of Moscow’s enormous prefab housing complexes invites us to contemplate the things that form our memories of the places in which we live.

Sleeping District Sleeping District

Synopsis

Stark Soviet architecture gave rise to prefab apartment blocks so massive that the people who inhabit them seem inconsequential. Tinne Zenner combines static shots of the structures with the words of the tenants, and although torn from the wider context they still take on a general validity in relation to that which forms our ideas about the place we live. Shot on 16mm, this silent movie brings to life a country’s memories and demonstrates that however cadaverous these concrete constructions may appear, their microcosms are certainly alive within them.
