This harrowing and poetic film avoids descriptiveness of any kind just as elegantly as does the commentary to the film itself, in which the filmmakers quote the words of their protagonist, a former prostitute named Sandy: “Sailors are like terrorists. They arrive in ports with a bomb called love and throw it. And do you know what happens? The bomb explodes when they go away and they never come back, destroying the hearts of all the girls in the neighborhood. How strange... To love somebody who pays you...” The nonlinear narrative presents us with sailors who spend long months on huge cargo vessels traversing the world’s oceans, and with portside prostitutes who provide these sinewy men with physical and, often, emotional comfort. Screened to acclaim at the Berlinale and Toronto’s Hot Docs festival, Exotica, Erotica, Etc. is a hypnotic plunge into a world where metal seafaring monsters tenaciously battle the majestic waves, and saline sailor sweat arouses women’s senses.

Evangelia Kranioti (b. 1979, Athens) studied law at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and piano at the Athens National Conservatory. Today she lives in Paris where she graduated from the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, subsequently pursuing postgraduate editorial design at the same institution. The recipient of many scholarships and grants, she has been awarded support from the J. F. Costopoulos Foundation, the Marc de Montalambert Foundation, the Mediterranean Center of Photography, the Cité internationale des Arts in Paris, and Capacete Rio de Janeiro, among others. In recent years she has mainly concentrated on photography, writing, and film. Toronto’s Hot Docs festival conferred its Emerging International Filmmaker Award upon her directorial debut Exotica, Erotica, Etc.
