Daniel’s World

Documentary Films - Out of Competition 2015 / Danielův svět / Czech Republic 2014

So far 25-year-old literary academy student Daniel is the sole member of the Czech pedophile community to choose to come out publicly. Screened in the Panorama at this year’s Berlinale, Daniel’s World sensitively portrays the young man’s road to overcoming his fear of those around him and above all of himself.

Daniel’s World Daniel’s World

Synopsis

The central figure in Veronika Lišková’s documentary is a 25-year-old literary academy student named Daniel. So far he is the sole member of the Czech pedophile community to decide to come out publicly. The movie sensitively and at the same time very subtly captures Daniel’s road to overcoming his fear of those around him, of his fantasies, and above all of himself. Is it possible to experience true love when its object is a young boy? Is it possible to have a happy life when nature has condemned such highly complex sexual orientations? How can a young individual come to terms with social reactions based on suspicion and prejudice? This humanist-oriented film, courageously addressing one of the most taboo of topics, entertains the opinions of other young people from the Czech pedophile community, showing how important awareness and education are in this regard. Indeed, up to 90% of child abuse cases are committed by people with a conventional sexual orientation.
