Song of Songs

Official Selection - Competition 2015 / Pesn pesney / Ukraine 2015

The acclaimed work by renowned Yiddish writer Sholem Aleichem served as inspiration for the Ukrainian filmmaker, whose third picture offers a markedly stylized vision of the lost world of the Jewish shtetl at the beginning of the 20th century. Poetic scenes created using truly magical images are loosely connected via the motif of childhood love, while the film’s imaginative form is imbued with nostalgia.

Synopsis

The acclaimed story by respected modern Yiddish author Sholem Aleichem served as inspiration for Ukrainian filmmaker Eva Neymann, whose third picture offers a beguiling portrayal of the Jewish shtetl at the beginning of the 20th century. The poetic film, which seeks more to create the right mood than provide a classic narration, weaves its motif of childhood love between ten-year-old Shimek and Buzya, a girl his age whose intensity Shimek only comes to realise on the threshold of adulthood. Through the dreamy eyes of the child protagonists and with the appropriate degree of nostalgia, the director presents us with magical images of a lost world. Neymann, whose previous film House with a Turret won the East of the West competition in 2012, returns to Karlovy Vary with a work which conveys her remarkable cinematic vision.
