Diamond Men

Horizons 2001 / Diamond Men / USA 2000

Diamond Men Diamond Men

Synopsis

In actor and producer Dan Cohen’s writing-directing debut, the eternal theme of the travelling salesman returns to the screen. After thirty years of roaming from town to small town in Pennsylvania and a heart attack to boot, experienced gem and diamond peddler Eddie Miller may not be able to keep on working. Out of kindness his boss assigns him to teach Bobby Walker, a young man who has no experience selling such goods. The two men are of different temperaments and the beginning is rather rough going. Gradually, however, they become friends. Eddie proves willing to initiate his fellow colleague into the mysteries of the trade. In return, the frivolous, skirt-chasing young man wants his mentor, a widower, to enjoy life a bit. Their first attempt, at an out-of-the-way massage parlour owned by Bobby’s girlfriend Tina, doesn’t turn out well. The second time, the owner of the Altoon Riding Club finds the right gal for the lonely man: a former secretary named Katie. This seemingly placid story, however, unexpectedly takes a more complicated turn. An intimate tale with gentle, humorous situations, criminal complications and a surprising outcome which profits particularly from its well-created atmosphere and convincing performances.

About the director

Dan Cohen graduated from Franklin & Marshall College and gained recognition with the independent romantic comedy Whole Truth (1992), for which he was screenwriter, co-director (with Jonathan Smythe), executive producer, and lead male actor portraying a dogged young man named Dan whose former lover takes him to court for sexual harassment. He wrote for the television series Hudson Street (1995), and in 2000 he debuted with Diamond Men, a film he wrote and directed and which makes use of his family’s long years of experience in the jewellery business.
