Calle 54

Inspired by Music 2001 / Calle 54 / Spain, France 2000

Calle 54 Calle 54 Calle 54 Calle 54

Synopsis

A musical film which is becoming an important historical document, since it gathers together the greatest figures in modern Latin American jazz – Tito Puente, Paquito D’Rivera, Gato Barbieri, Bebo Valdés, Eliane Elías, Chano Domínguez, Jerry Gonzáles. Observed by six cameras, these artists perform live in the studio – works written for film, hitherto unpublished compositions, or their greatest hits – in order to show the diversity of this musical current, born of a mixture of colourful races and developed by the Latin American community, from New York, Miami, Sčo Paulo, Havana and Puerto Rico to Seville in Spain. Director Fernando Trueba, who first encountered this kind of music during the early 1980s through the album Blowin’ by Paquito D’Rivera, yearned to share his passion in his own film, with the greatest possible number of people involved: “I felt it my duty to film an ode to Latin American jazz, music which helps me get the most out of life like nothing else on earth”.
