Window of the Soul

New Brazilian Documentary 2002 / Janela da alma / Brazil 2001

People from different parts of the globe tell about their vision of the world, and about how they view themselves and others. Many of them are sight impaired. José Saramango, Nobel laureate in literature, is among those interviewed. The movie presents a humorous and poetic look at the significance of the visible, wearing glasses and a world glutted with images.

Synopsis

In the documentary AWindow of the Soul, nineteen people from different continents speak about their vision of the world, and about how they view themselves and others. Some of them are sight impaired. Portuguese Nobel literature laureate José Saramango, neurologist Oliver Sacks and blind photographer (of Slovak origin) Evžen Bavčar are among the best known of those interviewed. The movie presents a humorous and poetic look at the significance of the visible, wearing glasses and a world glutted with images. The film won Best Documentary at the 25th Sao Paulo IFF.

About the director

Joao Jardim, Walter Carvalho

Joao Jardim studied film at New York University and graduated in journalism from the Faculdade da Cidade in Rio de Janeiro. He makes commercials, working with Carlos Manga and Walter Salles among others. A Window of the Soul is his feature-length documentary debut. Walter Carvalho is considered one of the most talented of cameramen. He has shot over 70 films, co-operating with top directors including Glauber Rocha and Cacá Diegues. He worked with Walter Salles on Central Station (Central do Brasil), which was nominated for an Academy Award. He has won Best Camera over twenty times.
