Exodus

Tribute to Otto Preminger 2016 / Exodus / USA 1960

Based on the novel of the same name by Leon Uris, this renowned cinematic epic investigates the controversial circumstances of the creation of the State of Israel by means of a viewer-friendly and critically-respected mix of poignant emotion, stirring action, high politics, and an enticing account of fundamental historical moments in the 20th century.

Exodus Exodus

Synopsis

“He knew how to keep the story moving and how to balance all its elements” – the words of Dalton Trumbo complimenting Otto Preminger, who chose the renowned screenwriter to adapt the best-selling novel Exodus for the screen. Today the well-known epic motion picture, detailing the creation of the State of Israel, gradually unfolds before the viewer along three storylines: the harrowing odyssey of the attempt by 600 Jews to reach Palestine from British occupied Cyprus after the Second World War, then the armed conflict between Jews and the British preceding the partition of Palestine in November 1947, and finally the clashes between settled Jews and Arabs refusing to submit to the UN resolution. As usual, Preminger is an exhilarating storyteller, boosting the impact of the powerful spectacle by filming on location with a generous budget and the assistance of top-tier actors from the ranks of talented beginners and experienced stars (Paul Newman, Eva Marie Saint, and, above all, Sal Mineo as the former Sonderkommando who joins the radical Zionist resistance group Irgun). The script tones down the novel’s marked anti-British, anti-Arab stance, and, as Preminger noted: “It also avoids propaganda.… I did not let myself be swayed by either side.”
