Summer 1910. The Brufort fishing family and the degenerate bourgeois Van Peteghems are suddenly forced upon one another when their children fall in love. Meanwhile, someone’s been going around murdering people in the vicinity, which doesn’t please the notorious inspector Machin one iota. A crazy sit-com with elements of the grotesque which provoked controversy at this year’s Cannes IFF.
Summer 1910. Several tourists have vanished from the local beach. Notorious inspector Machin and his associate Malfoy soon discover that the mysterious trail leads to the Bruforts, a local family of fishermen ruled with an iron fist by the father, nicknamed “The Eternal.” The degenerate bourgeois Van Peteghem family arrive at their holiday villa to take in the sun, the sea, and the local rural colour. Quite out of the blue, Brufort’s son Ma Loute and Billie Van Peteghem fall in love, a state of affairs that introduces an element of confusion and mystification into the lives of all concerned and starts to reveal something of their true characters. Bruno Dumont once again brings us a multilayered account of the darker aspects of human nature, here veiled within a slapstick piece and crazy situation comedy. The film offers a unique opportunity for well-known actors such as Juliette Binoche and Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi to demonstrate and explore their comedic talent. A visually entrancing work which provoked controversy at this year’s Cannes IFF.

Bruno Dumont (b. 1958, Bailleul, France) entered the film industry as a self-taught filmmaker. He gained international attention with his feature debut The Life of Jesus (La vie de Jésus, 1997). His provocative works have placed him among contemporary French filmmakers opting for a personal aesthetic style and unsettling subject matter, whose pictures evoke controversy with their naturalistic, taboo-defying approach. His films have been shown at prestigious festivals (incl. Karlovy Vary) and have won numerous awards: Humanity (L’humanité, 1999), Twentynine Palms (2003), Flanders (Flandres, 2006), Hadewijch (2009), Outside Satan (Hors Satan, 2011) and Camille Claudel 1915 (2013). Li’l Quinquin (P’tit Quinquin) was his first comedy and first TV project and, after its successful screening during Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes, it was also presented at KVIFF 49 in 2014.
