Kingdoms

Another View 2017 / Reinos / Chile 2017

A romance without romanticism. Alejandro is in his first year at university; Sofia is finishing her dissertation. With a cool, detached realism and sense for detail, Kingdoms exposes the anatomy of a university love affair. Besides the romantic storyline, which does not shy away from explicit erotic scenes, the film also engages in a subtle generational study.

Kingdoms Kingdoms

Synopsis

Alejandro is in his first year at university; Sofia is finishing her dissertation. They are basically quite ordinary individuals, but under director Lira’s guidance, the actors give natural performances that turn them into true-to-life characters – unique representatives of their kind. The story, told with raw openness, excellent observational skills, and a cool, detached realism, exposes the anatomy of a relationship between young college kids. How long will they last if it’s only about sex? Will their passions fade away, or will they discover new, perhaps darker emotions? Besides the romantic storyline, which does not shy away from explicit erotic scenes, the film also engages in a subtle social observation of various types of students, members of a generation without any specific plans or great prospects, alienated from the preceding generation. Kingdoms had its world premiere in international competition at the Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema.
