Contemporary Chilean cinema is present at every major festival, and things were no different this year at Cannes where Marcela Said’s second movie played Critics’ Week. This disturbing psycho-romance with political overtones brings together pampered fortysomething Marina and Juan, a former army officer troubled by a dark past (starring Antonia Zegers and Alfredo Castro from The Club).

Contemporary Chilean cinema is present at every major festival, and things were no different this year at Cannes, where Marcela Said’s second movie played Critics’ Week. In this disturbing psycho-romance with political overtones, pampered fortysomething Marina takes up horseback riding to compensate for a father who ignores her and a husband who couldn't care less. Her riding teacher is Juan, who is twenty years her senior. A former army officer with a dark past, The Colonel, as he is known, is under investigation for human rights violations committed while in the military decades earlier. “I met several former soldiers who, when being investigated for their actions during the dictatorship, felt betrayed not only by their ‘military family,’ but also by the civilians who had previously supported the regime. I found this really intriguing,” confides Said. Her film shows that the invisible walls built by the privileged members of Chilean society, in a buck-passing attempt to cut themselves off from the past, are not impenetrable. The movie features top-flight performances from Antonia Zegers and Alfredo Castro, who also starred in The Club.
