The Way He Looks

People Next Door 2017 / Hoje eu quero voltar sozinho / Brazil 2014

Leo is now fifteen and would like to live his own life. But since he’s blind, everyone around him is constantly trying to provide unasked-for assistance. His routine days are suddenly altered by the arrival of a new classmate – and by the intense feelings he has for the boy. Tenderness and spontaneity are the common denominators in an emotionally charged picture of first love and self-discovery.

The Way He Looks The Way He Looks

Synopsis

Lately things have been a bit much for Leo. He’s been spending every day after school with his best friend Giovana, but even their usual pastime of scoring the degree of their boredom ceases to entertain. Although just fifteen and blind, Leo wants to stand on his own feet and not constantly be the object of another’s care. The arrival of new classmate Gabriel transforms the vexing stasis of his life: now there’s someone who takes Leo as an equal, and what’s more, it seems that their feelings of friendship are mutually growing into something intimate. But it’s not just Leo who must wrap his head around the fledgling relationship – jealous Giovana has to come to terms with it as well... The debut feature by Daniel Ribeiro, which began its festival career in the Panorama section at the 2014 Berlinale, rightfully collected a string of audience awards around the world. Tenderness and spontaneity are the common denominators in an emotionally charged picture that embraces the taboos still surrounding physical disability and the discovery of one’s sexuality.
