Dig!

Forum of Independents - Competition 2005 / Dig! / USA 2003

A feature-length documentary shot over seven years about musicians Anton Newcombe, leader of the Brian Jonestown Massacre, and Courtney Taylor, head of The Dandy Warhols - star-crossed friends and bitter rivals. The film speaks about the destructiveness of contemporary show business, as well as the self-destruction of the artist. What is the price of fame and compromise, and the price you have to pay for total independence? An authentic drama, stronger than any feature film, about the rock music made to date.

Dig!

Synopsis

This is a feature-length documentary, shot over seven years, about musicians Anton Newcombe, leader of the Brian Jonestown Massacre, and Courtney Taylor, head of The Dandy Warhols - star-crossed friends and bitter rivals. From the moment they met, The Dandy Warhols and Brian Jonestown Massacre quickly bonded over a desire to not to conform to the tastes of the recording industry. Yet the bands’ choices in a profit-driven industry eventually put them at irreconcilable odds. Culled from 1,500 hours of footage, DIG! follows the underground giant Anton Newcombe, unearthing him as an important yet largely unnoticed artist of our time. The film asks questions about the price of fame and compromise, as well as the price paid for total independence, about the destructiveness of contemporary show business and the self-destruction of the artist. It brings an authentic drama, much stronger than in any feature film on rock music made to date.
