Support the Girls

Official Selection - Out of Competition 2018 / Support the Girls / USA 2018

Lisa is a dedicated restaurant manager who is trying to keep the place afloat, get on with the owner and the customers, and support her employees. But a deluge of accumulated problems gradually saps her patience. In a film about the search for dignity in a business that objectifies its employees, the natural performances of the entire female ensemble lent solid support.

Synopsis

Lisa is the dedicated general manager of a restaurant that attracts a host of regulars and the occasional traveler for a bit of relaxation: they can watch sports on TV while eyeing the comely waitresses, whose curves are barely hidden behind their scant uniforms. But today means more to Lisa than just another work shift. The deluge of mounting problems – the effort to keep the enterprise afloat, to get on with the owner and the customers, and to provide her girls with motherly support – is slowly pushing Lisa’s patience to the limit. The film, about finding dignity in a business that objectifies its employees, perceptively probes the lives of ordinary Americans and relies on the natural acting chops of the entire female cast, with the excellent Regina Hall as the queen bee.
