Styx

Another View 2018 / Styx / Germany, Austria 2018

A successful German doctor fulfils a long-held dream to sail across the Atlantic Ocean. She is prepared for anything – at least she thinks she is. However, her pilgrimage to Ascension Island is cut short when she comes across a boat overloaded with refugees.

Synopsis

Now in her mid-30s, Rike has everything a European could wish for – she’s successful, educated, and well provided for. Yet, as an overworked emergency doctor, she really needs time off and finally sets out alone from Gibraltar on a long-planned trip across the ocean in a small sailing boat. Her silent battle with the elements and sea currents, however, is soon interrupted when she encounters a refugee boat which doesn’t respond to radio contact. Rike will have to decide whether to continue her journey or try to attempt a rescue mission. But they won’t all fit in her boat… A visceral allegory of the modern world, this is the story of a confident woman who discovers that humanity ends in international waters.
