The Fireflies Are Gone

Official Selection - Competition 2018 / La disparition des lucioles / Canada 2018

The sleepy town where Léo lives doesn’t offer her much chance of self-fulfilment. Extricating herself from her mother’s influence and her constricting environment isn’t easy for the frustrated young woman, yet happiness might be close at hand. A stylistically precise, pop-impressionistic film about a girl’s quest to find out who she really is, featuring the captivating Karelle Tremblay in the lead role.

The Fireflies Are Gone The Fireflies Are Gone

Synopsis

The sleepy industrial town tucked away in a small bay doesn’t offer young Léo much chance of self-fulfilment. She despises her life with her mother and stepfather while nurturing romantic notions about her distant father. It is not until an encounter with timid guitarist Steve, however, that she manages to pull herself out of her lethargy. The captivating Karelle Tremblay in the role of the spontaneous yet defiant girl injects the coming-of-age story with an infectious energy which is superbly complemented by the picture’s stylistic precision. Despite the quasi-pop feel to the film in places, Sébastien Pilote maintains an impressionistic slant to his direction that lends this tale of elusive happiness a lightly dreamlike quality.
