While Lára, a single mother with a drug history, struggles with her oppressive situation in life, Adja is attempting illegally to get to her daughter in Canada via Iceland. When the two women’s lives intersect at passport control, neither of them realises the extent to which they will alter the course of each other’s destiny. This socio-critical drama about life on the fringes embraces the tradition of European realism, reflected at the very heart of the protagonists’ daily existence, and highlights their struggle with social determination and with their own weaknesses. For her powerful story, which also conveys the importance of helping others, Ísold Uggadóttir won Sundance’s Directing Award, and her debut was thus hailed as the first Icelandic film to win an award at the Utah festival.
