Fact, memories and imaginings merge together in this explosive drama, in which dancer, actress, screenwriter and director Andréa Bescond processes her own traumatic experiences as a child who was sexually abused by a family friend. Her Odette is both an eight-year-old girl and a successful adult dancer struggling through the appalling encounters of long ago with the help of free-spirited dance. With regular visits to a psychotherapist Odette’s memories start to come alive, while Bescond and co-director Eric Métayer shift their focus between her outwardly carefree childhood and the reality of the present day, doing so with a remarkably free hand and an inventive production design. This rousing picture, incorporating moments of humour despite its weighty theme, was a hit at Cannes this year.
