The first Kenyan film to be chosen for Cannes’ Official Selection presents the new face of African cinema, which boldly breaks down traditional taboos. In this case the story of two schoolgirls who fall in love, even though their fathers are political rivals and, moreover, firmly entrenched in a fierce campaign…

Synopsis

“Growing up, we watched many Europeans and Americans fall in love on our screens over and over: but never us. That kind of affection was reserved for foreigners.” Director Wanuri Kahiu decided to film a story of Kenyan women in love, but its not a portrait of the kind of obedient wife that conservative Kenyan society might expect. Kena and Ziki become friends, even though their fathers are campaigning against each other in the local elections. When they fall in love, they must face larger problems than political rivalry; in their traditional society, their relationship is unacceptable and strictly forbidden by law. They will thus have to choose between happiness and safety.
