We try to be successful at work, in our relationships, and in carrying out family responsibilities. But sometimes it becomes impossible, as Olivier discovers when his marriage falls apart, perhaps because he took it for granted. A masterly minimalist drama about a man left alone to face his life.
As in his first picture, Guillaume Senez’s second feature continues developing the theme of fatherhood and its challenges. Olivier is an attentive dad, husband, and shift boss at a local warehouse. He looks after his workers as he does his own family, and maybe that’s what ultimately destroys his marriage. When Olivier’s wife up and splits without so much as a by-your-leave, he must suddenly take care of their two little kids all by himself. The film is not built upon flashy dramatic gestures, but upon the low-key expression submitted by actor Romain Duris and his on-screen family. In like fashion, the movie doesn’t present a parade of tragic situations – every storm must come to an end, and even the biggest family crisis can provide an opportunity for a new life.
