The $3 million inheritance his father left is a sufficient reason for Charlie to kidnap his autistic brother from the institute where he lives. But by the time their journey across the United States comes to an end Charlie has gained something more valuable than money. Portraying mentally challenged Raymond, the excellent Dustin Hoffman took one of four Academy Awards conferred upon the film, which also won the Golden Bear at the Berlinale.
Synopsis
Winner of four Academy Awards, this iconic road movie follows Charlie’s journey across the United States with his autistic brother Raymond, but the various locales and inhabitants they encounter remain in the background in favor of the picture’s focus on the brothers’ developing relationship. The account of their getting to know each other sends a humanist message: Raymond teaches the pragmatic Charlie how to empathize with others and to think beyond maximizing his own interests. A smattering of sentimentality? Never mind because it morphs into masterfully paced, punchy episodes, often gently humorous and betraying detailed psychological insight. The lion’s share of the credit goes to Dustin Hoffman for his deft portrayal of the superlatively authentic character of Raymond.
