Our Time

Horizons 2019 / Nuestro tiempo / Mexico, France, Germany, Denmark, Sweden 2018

Juan and Ester have a farm where they breed fighting bulls. Juan is also a recognised poet, and he and his wife have an open relationship which allows them other lovers. But things get complicated when Ester starts sleeping with someone and says nothing about it to Juan.

Our Time Our Time

Synopsis

In his previous film Light after Darkness Carlos Reygadas described the fate of a young family who leave their urban environment and move to the country. The characters in Our Time own a cattle ranch where they have been successfully breeding and training bulls for years, yet they too come up against the reality of a life they’d conjured up in their minds. Juan and Esther have an open relationship and both regularly engage in extramarital sex, afterward speaking candidly about their experiences. When Esther starts seeing macho Phil behind her husband’s back, Juan begins to realise that he’s unable to handle a situation he already agreed to. What follows is a painful marital crisis captured through Reygadas’ typically honed lensing: all-embracing perspectives and also the most subjective views.
