Monsters.

Another View 2019 / Monștri. / Romania 2019

Dana and Arthur, a seemingly perfect couple, have been married for almost ten years. But as we follow them through the streets of Bucharest over the course of 24 hours, doubts, divergent needs, and struggles with inner demons persistently bubble to the surface. Directed with ample empathy, this relationship study touching on social taboos was one of the most distinctive debuts at this year’s Berlinale.

Monsters. Monsters.

Synopsis

Dana and Arthur have been married for almost 10 years, and they seem like the perfect couple. But as we follow them through the streets of Bucharest over the course of 24 hours, doubts, divergent needs, and struggles with inner demons persistently bubble to the surface. Talented Romanian director Marius Olteanu divides this subtly narrated tale of social taboos into three parts: after focusing on the protagonists individually, he concludes with them as a couple. His empathetically directed relationship study, illustrating how we unintentionally always hurt the ones we love, was one of the most distinctive debuts at this year’s Berlinale.
