In Fabric

Another View 2019 / In Fabric / United Kingdom 2018

The January sales at a slightly bizarre boutique go somewhat awry. While a bank clerk has problems with a cursed dress she’s just bought (you can’t just stick it in the washing machine, we’ll tell you that much), the boutique staff perform esoteric rituals after closing time… This wild assemblage by Peter Strickland is as much a tribute to the cult giallo film genre as it is an expression of deference towards fabric itself, the star of the show.

In Fabric In Fabric

Synopsis

Hoping to improve her day, Sheila Woolchapel wanders into a slightly bizarre store. She has a blind date coming up and a new dress might just break her bad run of useless men. The red dress that the saleswoman Miss Luckmoore deftly coaxes her into may be rather bold, but it’s so beautiful! Unfortunately, it’s also cursed. What exactly is the dress capable of? Will it bring Sheila happiness or signal her ruin? Probably only the store staff know, occupied as they are with titillating arcane rituals in the dead of night. Suffice it to say, a prewash won’t help… This wild assemblage by writer-director Peter Strickland is as much a tribute to the cult giallo film genre as it is an expression of admiration for fabric itself – the star of the show.
