Requiem for a Maiden

Liberated 2019 / Requiem pro panenku / Czechoslovakia 1991

Fourteen-year-old Marika finds herself in an institute for mentally ill girls, where the nurses’ cruel treatment of her slowly fuels a rage that leads to tragedy. Inspired by a true story, this psychological thriller became a symbol for the local genre dynamism of the 1990s. Anna Geislerová shines in the starring role.

Requiem for a Maiden Requiem for a Maiden

Synopsis

Filip Renč’s directorial debut was inspired by journalist Josef Klíma’s account of a 1984 fire. Although a student of documentary film at the time, Renč decided to adapt the subject into a feature. The result is a powerful drama of a sexually abused 14-year-old named Marika, who is mistakenly sent to an institution for mentally ill girls. The nurses’ cruel treatment and lack of concern slowly fuel a sense of rage within the traumatized girl that eventually results in tragedy. Renč’s passionate picture, symbolic of the local genre dynamism of the 1990s, already employs his distinctively expressive style. Anna Geislerová shines in the starring role.
