Scandinavian Silence

East of the West - Competition 2019 / Skandinaavia vaikus / Estonia, France, Belgium 2019

A brother and sister set out across a silent winter landscape, but after years apart they have difficulty communicating. This minimalist study of a difficult sibling relationship presents three versions of the same story, asking whether time can heal the wounds of the past.

Synopsis

Martti Helde’s second feature takes us into a silent winter landscape where a newly released inmate reunites with his sister after many years apart. They set out on a journey together but have difficulty communicating. In order to truly re-connect they will have to face the traumas of the past head-on. This minimalist study of a difficult sibling relationship presents three versions of the same story, offering viewers different ways of looking at the events in question. The result is a focused exploration of the protagonists’ inner worlds, whose intensity is underscored by the film’s black-and-white cinematography and its ambient soundtrack.
