Gold Is All There Is

Another View 2019 / Tutto l'oro che c'è / Italy, Switzerland, France 2019

Ticino, the azure river. Born in the mountains, it flows through fertile plains and on to a lake. It is a world in and of itself. Its banks provide shelter for insects, animals, and solitary gold prospectors. It gives life to the surrounding landscape and to people that never meet.

Gold Is All There Is Gold Is All There Is

Synopsis

A nature documentary that is actually about people. Life lazily goes about its existence in the Ticino river basin. Birds, ants, deer – the local wildlife calmly ignores the humans that come to visit. One young boy looks lost yet, for him, the river is a playground, a place of fantasy and adventure. On the other hand, a shotgun-toting hunter thinks of the river basin as a duck hunting opportunity. Or maybe he’s a poacher, as suggested by an aging ranger observing tracks among the reeds. Although the film follows several characters, its aim is not to tell their story. Just as a fisherman watches the river slowly wending its way, the director, too, monitors life in and around the Ticino River in this cinematic meditation on the fragile balance between humans and nature.
