Miss Hanoi

Czech Films 2018–2019 2019 / Miss Hanoi / Czech Republic, Slovak Republic 2018

In this captivating crime drama, a mysterious death in the border town of Varnsdorf brings together a cynical detective and a young idealistic police officer. Their investigation leads them to the local Vietnamese community, which is bound by rigid rules and complicated relationships.

Miss Hanoi Miss Hanoi

Synopsis

Captain Kříž (David Novotný) travels to Varnsdorf to investigate the death of a local thug. The trail leads to the local Vietnamese community, where young officer Anh (Ha Thanh Špetlíková) acts as his guide. But her involvement threatens to influence the investigation because one of the suspects is her former boyfriend. Director Zdeněk Viktora’s crime drama revolves around the relationship between the two investigators: he’s a hardened cynic, she’s a hardworking idealist. But the picture also delves into the web of relationships that characterize life in the Czech Republic’s Vietnamese community. Like many members of her Czech Vietnamese generation, officer Anh grew up in a foster family since her parents wanted to concentrate on their business.
