Carte Blanche

People Next Door 2019 / Carte Blanche / Poland 2015

Popular secondary school teacher Kacper starts having problems with his vision and the medical prognosis is grim: soon he won’t be able to see at all. But Kacper refuses to surrender to his affliction; he is determined to prepare his class for their school-leaving exams, even if it means concealing his progressive disease from everyone around him. A drama based on a true story starring the outstanding Andrzej Chyra.

Synopsis

When Kacper, a popular secondary school teacher, starts having occasional problems with his vision, he doesn’t think it’s anything serious. His diagnosis, however, will soon confirm the opposite is true. He suffers from a genetic disorder, and total loss of sight is inevitable. But Kacper refuses to accept the prognosis and sets himself a seemingly impossible goal in order to keep a job he loves – to conceal his condition so that he can take his class right through to their school-leaving exams. Polish director Jacek Lusiński based Carte Blanche on a true story which he recast into an evocative study of a man who is gradually going blind; the film also embraces a universal message about the importance of human courage and lasting friendships. The excellent Andrzej Chyra stars as the charismatic teacher.
