Shoplifters

People Next Door 2021 / Manbiki kazoku / Japan 2018

Osamu lives with his family in makeshift accommodation on the edge of town and “earns” extra money by engaging in theft. After one of his heists, he takes the neglected young girl Yuri under his wing, but this sets in motion an unexpected sequence of events that reveal a long hidden family secret. A multi-layered drama that artfully redefines the concept of family and places responsibility for others above social norms.

Shoplifters Shoplifters

Synopsis

Day laborer Osamu lives with his family in makeshift accommodation on the edge of town and “earns” extra money by engaging in theft – a profession into which he initiates his young son. After one successful heist, the two see the neglected Yuri, a girl apparently unwanted by her parents, playing alone on a balcony in the freezing cold. They decide to take her under their wing, but this sets in motion an unexpected sequence of events that reveal a long hidden family secret. The award-winning Japanese director's multi-layered drama artfully redefines the concept of family and places empathy and responsibility for others above the moral norms of society. Palme d'Or at Cannes 2018.
