Horizons 2022 / Utama / Bolivia, Uruguay, France 2022

An ongoing drought forces an elderly Quechuan Indian couple to face a complicated dilemma: do they stay in an inhospitable landscape or leave for the city? In his Sundance-winning debut, director Alejandro Loayza Grisi shows himself to be a skilled storyteller, capable of imbuing a spare drama from a forgotten corner of the world with a universal sense of humanity while presenting, without preaching, a statement on the creeping impact of climate change.

Synopsis

An elderly Quechuan Indian couple live with their herd of llamas in the Bolivian highlands. But drought threatens their peaceful existence, forcing them to face the inevitable: do they continue living in an increasingly hostile landscape, or leave for the city and cut their ties to the land and their indigenous neighbors? In his Sundance-winning debut, director Alejandro Loayza Grisi applies his experience as a cinematographer to distill the film’s setting – the arid, sparsely settled Andean plateau – into captivating images. He also shows himself as a skilled storyteller, capable of imbuing a spare drama from a forgotten corner of the world with a universal sense of humanity, seamlessly incorporating mythological elements and, without preaching, presenting a statement on the creeping impact of climate change.
