You Won't Be Alone

Special Screenings 2022 / You Won't Be Alone / Australia, United Kingdom, Serbia 2021

A remote mountain village is under threat from a bloodthirsty witch named Marie, whose spirit is capable of entering the bodies of murder victims and slain animals. One day the witch leaves her mark on the newborn Nevena, and the girl’s fate is sealed forever… Stalevski delivers a highly original, atmospheric horror flick, working with Macedonian mythology as he deftly interweaves folkloric motifs with existential questions, while also examining the position of women.

Synopsis

A remote mountain village is under threat from a bloodthirsty witch named Marie, whose spirit is capable of entering the bodies of slain villagers and animals. One day the witch leaves her mark on the newborn Nevena, and the girl’s fate is sealed forever… In his atmospheric horror flick the Macedonian-born debuting director transports us to his native country and to the 19th century. Adopting a highly original approach he works with local mythology as he portrays the conditions of the time, deftly interweaving folkloric motifs with existential questions, while also examining the position of women. Malickian in its poetic vision, this at times gruesome film is well complemented by Mark Bradshaw’s hypnotic score and the persuasive performances of the female ensemble cast headed by Anamaria Marinca and Noomi Rapace.
