See You Friday, Robinson

Out of the Past 2022 / À vendredi, Robinson / France, Switzerland, Iran, Lebanon 2022

An affectionate depiction of an encounter between two breathless titans. Jean-Luc Godard and Iranian filmmaker and literary figure Ebráhím Golestán engage in long-distance exchanges of quotations and cryptic statements. Their dialogue, which should have taken place long ago in the last century, inevitably consists of weighty themes, such as humanity, time, art and death.

Synopsis

An affectionate depiction of an encounter between two breathless titans. Jean-Luc Godard and Iranian filmmaker and literary figure Ebrahim Golestan engage in long-distance exchanges from their places of residence via a series of quotations and cryptic statements. Their dialogue, which should have taken place long ago last century, inevitably consists of weighty themes, such as humanity, time, art and death. At the same time, their egos do not eclipse the film’s director, who further connects and processes the manner in which the protagonists present themselves. Now in their nineties, these solitary Robinsons, each on an island defined by history and temperament, are revealed not only as wilful artists and thinkers drifting freely on the waves of intertextuality, but also as frail creatures troubled by old age.
