Rubikon

Special Screenings 2022 / Rubikon / Austria 2022

It's the year 2056 and oxygen is running out on a devastated Earth. One possible solution is a project being developed on the space station Rubikon under the supervision of the idiosyncratic geneticist Dimitri. A work of pure science fiction, Rubikon is unusual within the context of European cinema. Despite its genre identification, it tries to answer questions related to the climate crisis and individual responsibility for the good of mankind.

Rubikon Rubikon

Synopsis

The year is 2056. Control over a devastated Earth is divided among seven ruling corporations. Oxygen is running out and mankind has to find new ways of surviving. One possible solution is the space station Rubikon, where the geneticist Dimitri is working on an independent ecosystem. The soldier Hanna and the scientist Gavin arrive to inspect the project. When the three meet in orbit, they don’t know that they might soon be the only survivors in the entire universe… Director Magdalena Lauritsch’s feature debut is unusual within the context of European cinema: a work of pure science fiction that nevertheless does not avoid asking fundamental questions. Must an individual bear responsibility for the entire human race and, if this is the case, should he be forced to do so?
