The Bélier Family

People Next Door 2022 / La famille Bélier / France, Belgium 2014

Paula is sixteen, she helps her family on the farm, and she goes to school, where she has her eye on a boy she fancies; and, while it wasn’t really her plan, she finds herself singing in the school choir. Except that her life is somewhat unusual: her family is hearing-impaired. A superbly cast coming-of-age story, in which deafness is the least of everyone’s problems. The film went on to provide the inspiration for the American, Oscar-winning CODA.

The Bélier Family The Bélier Family

Synopsis

Paula is sixteen, she helps her family on the farm, and she goes to school, where she has her eye on a boy she fancies. However, her life is somewhat unusual. Her parents and brother are all hearing-impaired, thus the family unit functions in a symbiosis, in which Paula is literally the voice of the family and its interpreter as well. One day she unintentionally becomes a member of the school choir and the choirmaster discovers she is exceptionally talented, something her parents, for obvious reasons, find difficult to understand… The Bélier Family is a superbly cast and touching coming-of-age story, in which deafness is the least of everyone’s problems. A huge hit with audiences, the film went on to provide the inspiration for the American, Oscar-winning CODA.
