After the abdication of his older brother Edward, Prince Albert ascends the throne as King George VI. The Second World War is on the horizon and the country needs a strong leader, however, the introverted Bertie, who suffers from a speech impediment, is something of a joke to the public. Synopsis
After the controversial abdication of his older brother Edward, Prince Albert, nicknamed Bertie, ascends the throne as King George VI. The Second World War is on the horizon and the country needs a strong leader, however, the introverted Bertie, overburdened with unexpected obligations, suffers from a speech impediment that the public find comical. His wife Elizabeth sets up a meeting with Lionel Logue, an eccentric speech therapist, thanks to whom the king overcomes his stammer and delivers an inspirational speech to his people, in the process forging a close friendship with Logue. The Oscar-winning film laced with British humour boasts excellent performances from the central cast comprising Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter, who supplied the required sparkle and depth to their characters.
