Synopsis
Monica returns to her family home after a long absence to look after her ailing mother (Patricia Clarkson). It is the first time since her departure that she makes contact with her family, and the first time her mother sees her after her sex change. Will she be accepted for who she is, as she has always wanted to be? An intimate portrait of a woman forced by circumstances to face her past, Monica explores universal themes of forgiveness, aging, and the importance of a mother’s unconditional love. It offers an evocative “deep-dive” into the main character’s inner world, focusing on her pains, fears, needs, and desires while successfully illustrating the consequences that rejection can have on an individual’s self-image.
