Dragon's Return

Out of the Past 2023 / Drak sa vracia / Czechoslovakia 1967

Dragon's Return Dragon's Return

Synopsis

A potter named Martin Lepiš is the tragic hero of this parable about instinctive human hatred which, in seeking an outlet, has claimed many an innocent victim. The village community falsely accuses Lepiš, nicknamed the Dragon, of evil intentions, and not even his courageous act can save him from his destiny as an eternal pariah. The magical elements of the original novella are intensified in the film chiefly by the artistically expressive black-and-white camera, evoking the atmosphere of the wild mountain landscape, and by the restrained acting performances and minimalist, experimental soundtrack. The unforgiving scene, in which a herd of cattle is rescued from a forest fire, is a pure example of filmmaking mastery.
