Contempt

Out of the Past 2023 / Le Mépris / France, Italy 1963

Contempt Contempt

Synopsis

In celebration of its sixtieth anniversary, Contempt, one of the iconic films by tireless innovator and provocateur of world cinema Jean–Luc Godard, recently saw the release of its new 4K restoration. This loose reworking of Alberto Moravia’s novel is set in the film industry and examines the conflict between the desire to make money and the quest for creative freedom. Screenwriter Paul Javal (Michel Piccoli) is hired by an unscrupulous American producer named Jeremy to redraft a script for a screen adaptation to be shot by none other than Fritz Lang (who plays himself in the film). Yet the more Paul sells himself out, the more his wife (Brigitte Bardot) holds him in contempt.
