Synopsis
In Jordan, inheritance law applies only to men. If a woman does not have any male heirs, she must split the property with the extended family. When Nawal’s husband unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself in just such a situation. Left alone with a young daughter, she must face her country’s unfavorable patriarchal laws, ravenous relatives, and her husband’s past. At the center of this social drama is actress Mouna Hawa, who has manifested a boundless range of emotions in a character who besides learning to drive also begins to take control of her own life on her journey towards more equal conditions. The first Jordanian film ever screened at Cannes features an outstanding script filled with twists and turns that is equal parts caustic, angry, and touching.
