Dying Dying

Synopsis

Dying is the story of a family that long ago stopped being a family. Lissy cares for a husband with advanced dementia, but she is not in the best of health herself. Their son, Tom, is a conductor working on a difficult new piece. He has also become a surrogate father to his ex-girlfriend’s newborn son, leaving him with no time to care for his parents or his sister Ellen, who has alcohol and relationship problems. Winner of Best Screenplay at the Berlinale, this majestic fresco is not nearly as bleak as its title and summary might suggest. Humor as dark as diabetes, kidney failure, and cancer combined is interspersed with moments of pure tenderness and love in places where we would least expect it.
