Tribute to Nicole Holofcener 2024 / Please Give / USA 2010

Please Give Please Give

Synopsis

Having dissected the dynamics of female relationships in previous years, Nicole Holofcener began the 2010s with this biting, hugely affecting New York-set comedy of manners about an antique-dealing married couple waiting for their tetchy neighbor to die so they can take over her flat. Featuring a stellar cast fronted by Holofcener regular Catherine Keener and including Oliver Platt, Rebecca Hall, and Amanda Peet, Please Give is one of the director’s richest works to date: a subtle, emotional dramedy about white guilt, the sheltering power of class privilege, and the middle-class quest for elusive happiness. Holofcener’s signature neurotic characters are typically unlikable, but the pathos and compassion would mark a new direction for the filmmaker's expanding palette.
