Parthenope

Horizons 2024 / Parthenope / Italy, France 2023

Parthenope Parthenope

Synopsis

No contemporary world-class filmmaker has managed to come as close to finding the perfect cinematic definition of beauty as Paolo Sorrentino. Yet this isn’t a superficially glittering portrayal; on the contrary, its mediators are aware of their power and also of the loneliness that comes with it. Here, for the first time, Sorrentino places a female protagonist at the centre of the narrative, the ravishing Parthenope, whose life unfolds in chapters spanning several decades. This same name was given in the past to the unmistakable city of Naples, whose attraction could be life-changing, as in the case of the beautiful woman veiled in melancholy. With his stylishly polished, seductive film, Sorrentino returned to the Cannes competition this year for the seventh time.
